Haolun
My name is Haolun, and I am one of the student researchers in YouthCARES, Cohort 2. The research team is filled with enthusiasm for collecting data and analyzing patterns. Their passion inspired me to learn, improve, and reinforce the statistical analytic techniques. The project goes peripheral of high school knowledge, so it is normal to make mistakes. For instance, I got assigned to interpret an interview transcript and make a case profile. It was my first time doing the case profiles, so I felt overwhelmed. I have never had previous experience, and I was confused by the interview transcript. No doubt, I failed on the first case profile. It is always important to do self-reflection after completing each task. I review the comments from my mentors and teammates, interpret them, and make improvements. I believe starting an internship at a young age will be helpful for people’s future careers, and it helps people to determine which specific area they are passionate about, narrowing their future goals. Furthermore, it also helps people to gain more expertise because they have started earlier than others. Do not overlook the time value of compounding! The earlier you start, the more experience you will be able to gain. YouthCARES provided me with a great opportunity to gain leadership, communication skills, and analytical techniques.
